The Lyceum acts as a catalyst to bring together diverse opinions and expertise to focus on national and state issues, and seeks to emphasize constructive private sector, public sector and individual responses to these issues. To accomplish these purposes, the Lyceum holds an annual Public Conference, conducts the Texas Lyceum Poll (a nationally acclaimed opinion poll), and convenes programs for the Directors to explore and discuss key economic and social issues of the state and nation.The Texas Lyceum is comprised of a 96-member Board of Directors from across the State. Each Director has demonstrated leadership abilities in their communities and across the State. Each term begins on January 1st of each year. No person's first term as a Director may begin on or after that person's 46th birthday. Individuals applying for the Class of 2018 are not eligible for membership if their birthday is on or before January 1, 1972.
How does a person apply for membership?
Once a year, Directors and Alumni nominate individuals to be elected as Directors for a three-year term. A Director may be re-elected to a second three-year term. After candidates are reviewed by the Annual Nominating Committee, a slate of nominees is presented to the current Directors who then vote on that slate.
To apply, individuals must complete a two-step process to ensure an application is complete and considered for review. Applications are online only. Applications for the Class of 2018 will open in the summer of 2017.
1) Applicants must populate all fields of the Membership Application. You may EDIT your application at any time before the deadline and before clicking "Submit" at the end of the application by logging back into your account.
2) Each application requires at least two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a current Lyceum Director or Alumnus. Additional letters from current Lyceum Directors, Alumni or other individuals are encouraged. All letters must be submitted electronically via the online application.
Applications AND letters of recommendation must be submitted online on or before September 1, 2017 for the Class of 2018.
The Lyceum Directors meet four times each year in quarterly meetings across the state. The topic and format of each meeting depends upon input from the Board of Directors but usually addresses timely topics through presentation by experts and interaction between Lyceum Directors.
Participation: Directors are expected to participate actively in discussions, reflect on the issues facing Texas, and commit to addressing challenges. The best and most robust discussions are when all Lyceum Directors participate. To that end, the Lyceum’s attendance policy is strictly adhered to: Directors must attend at least five quarterly meetings during a consecutive two-year period, at least two of which must be in one calendar year.
Financial Commitment*: (a) Annual Dues: $1,250.00 includes registration for quarterly meetings (four meetings** per year includes meeting activities and most meals on Friday and Saturday) (b) Expenses: Directors are also responsible for the cost of hotel and personal travel to a meeting. Every attempt is made to minimize meeting expenses.
* Dues are subject to change with each new calendar year.
**In some years, the Lyceum hosts an optional fifth meeting. Registration costs for these optional meetings are in addition to dues.
Successful candidates for the Class of 2018 must attend a required Director Orientation which will be held in January, 2018. The exact date and city will be announced this summer.
Engagement: All Directors should participate on at least one planning commitee each year.
